What Is the Agnipath Scheme

The Agnipath Scheme is a central government initiative that allows young Indians to serve in the armed forces for a fixed four-year period. Those selected as Agniveers serve in the Indian Air Force, receive structured training, earn a monthly stipend, and build a Seva Nidhi corpus over four years.

At the end of the four-year service:

  • Up to 25% of Agniveers may be retained for permanent service based on performance and vacancies
  • The remaining 75% receive the Seva Nidhi package — a lump sum of approximately ₹11.71 lakh (tax-free) along with skill certificates recognised by the government
  • Several state governments and central government departments offer priority hiring to Agniveer alumni

For J&K candidates specifically, this is a strong career pathway — the Seva Nidhi package, combined with government priority hiring benefits, gives Agniveer alumni a significant advantage in subsequent government job applications.

Selection Process — What Comes After the Written Exam

The written exam is only the first stage. Here is the complete selection process:

Stage 1 — Online Written Examination ✅ Completed (March 30–31, 2026) The exam tested English, Physics, and Mathematics (Science stream) or Reasoning and General Awareness (other streams), depending on the trade applied for.

Stage 2 — Physical Fitness Test (PFT) Candidates who clear the written exam are called for the Physical Fitness Test. Standards:

Test Male Female
1.6 km Run Within 7 minutes Within 8 minutes
Push-ups 10 in 1 minute Not applicable
Sit-ups 10 in 1 minute 10 in 1 minute
Height Minimum 152 cm Minimum 152 cm
Chest (Male) 77 cm unexpanded, 82 cm expanded

Stage 3 — Adaptability Test A psychological/adaptability assessment conducted on the same day as PFT or immediately after.

Stage 4 — Medical Examination A thorough medical examination at an Air Force medical facility. Vision, hearing, physical health, and fitness for military service are assessed. The medical standards are strict — any disqualifying condition identified here ends candidacy regardless of written exam score.

Stage 5 — Document Verification Original documents are verified against what was submitted in the application.

Stage 6 — Merit List & Enrolment Final selection is based on overall performance across all stages. Enrolled Agniveers undergo basic training before beginning their four-year service.
