What Is IGNOU and Why It Matters for J&K Students
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was established in 1985 and is currently one of the largest open universities in the world. It holds an A++ NAAC grade and is fully recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). A degree from IGNOU carries the same value as a degree from any regular university — it is valid for government job applications, higher studies, and professional purposes.
For students in Jammu & Kashmir, IGNOU is particularly useful for three reasons:
You study at your own pace. IGNOU’s open and distance learning (ODL) model means you are not tied to a fixed classroom schedule. This makes it ideal for students who are simultaneously preparing for JKSSB, JKPSC, or other competitive exams.
It is affordable. IGNOU course fees are among the lowest of any recognised university in India — ranging from approximately ₹1,200 to ₹18,000 per semester depending on the course.
There is a regional centre in J&K. IGNOU has a regional centre in Srinagar and study centres across Jammu and Kashmir divisions. For programme guidance, assignment submission, and practical sessions, you work through your nearest study centre — you do not need to travel outside J&K.
Important: DEB ID Is Now Mandatory
From 2026, all students applying for ODL programmes must create a DEB ID (Distance Education Bureau ID) before submitting their application. Without this, your admission will not be processed.
Create your DEB ID at: deb.ugc.ac.in
You will need an ABC ID (Academic Bank of Credit ID) to create your DEB ID. If you do not have an ABC ID, create one first at abc.gov.in.
Courses Available — July 2026
IGNOU offers over 333 programmes across all levels. Here are the most commonly enrolled courses:
| Level | Popular Courses | Minimum Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | BA, BCom, BSc, BBA, BCA, BLIS, BSW | 3 years |
| Postgraduate | MA, MBA, MCom, MSc, MCA, MSW, MLiSc | 2 years |
| Diploma | DECE, DNHE, DNA | 1 year |
| Certificate | CJL, CCH, CPY, COF, CGDA | 6 months – 1 year |
Popular among J&K students: BA (Political Science, History, Sociology), MA (English, History, Public Administration), BCA, MCA, and MBA are consistently among the most enrolled programmes from the J&K region.
Online-only programmes: IGNOU also offers fully online programmes including BCA Online and MCA Online — these have no printed study materials and are suitable for students comfortable with digital learning.
Eligibility
For Undergraduate programmes: Class 12 pass from any recognised board. No upper age limit for most UG programmes — this is one of IGNOU’s biggest advantages. Some courses like BCA require Mathematics at Class 12 level.
For Postgraduate programmes: Bachelor’s degree from any UGC-recognised university. Minimum marks in graduation vary by programme (typically 50%). For MBA, you must also clear the OPENMAT entrance test.
For Diploma and Certificate programmes: Most require Class 10 or Class 12 pass, depending on the programme.
How to Apply — Step by Step
Step 1: Create your DEB ID at deb.ugc.ac.in (mandatory for ODL programmes)

Step 4: Select your programme and regional centre (select J&K regional centre — Srinagar)
Step 5: Fill in all personal and academic details accurately
Step 6: Upload the required documents (see below)
Step 7: Pay the registration fee (₹300) and course fee online
Step 8: Submit and save your enrolment confirmation
Documents to Upload
| Document | Requirement |

| Class 12 marksheet | For UG admission |
| Graduation certificate/marksheet | For PG admission |

All documents must be uploaded in the format and file size specified on the portal. Incorrect format is a common reason for application rejection.
IGNOU Regional Centre — Jammu & Kashmir
Students in J&K apply under the Srinagar Regional Centre or the Jammu Regional Centre depending on their location.
- Srinagar Regional Centre: IGNOU Regional Centre, University of Kashmir Campus, Naseem Bagh, Srinagar — 190006
- Jammu Regional Centre: IGNOU Regional Centre, SIDCO Electronic Complex, Rangreth, Jammu — 180006
Select the correct regional centre during your application — this determines which study centre you are assigned to and where you submit assignments and appear for practical sessions.
Re-registration for Existing Students
If you are already enrolled in an IGNOU programme and need to register for the next year or semester, the re-registration portal is separate:
Go to: onlinerr.ignou.ac.in
Last date for re-registration: June 30, 2026
Re-registration fee: ₹300
Missing the re-registration deadline means you cannot continue your current programme in the July session. Do this immediately if you are an existing student.
