IGNOU assignments are not optional. They carry 30% of your total marks in every course — the remaining 70% comes from your Term End Examination (TEE). If you do not submit your assignments before the deadline, you are not allowed to appear for the TEE. Missing assignments means missing your exam entirely, regardless of how well prepared you are.
This post covers everything IGNOU students need to know about assignments in 2026 — what they are, when to submit, how to submit, and what to do if something goes wrong.
What Are IGNOU Assignments
IGNOU assignments are called Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). For each course you are enrolled in, IGNOU provides an assignment booklet containing a set of questions. You write your answers in your own handwriting, submit the completed assignment to your study centre, and a tutor evaluates and marks it.
The marks you receive from your assignment (out of 100, weighted to 30% of your final score) are combined with your TEE marks (70%) to calculate your final grade for that course.
There is no way around this — both components are mandatory. A student who scores 85% in the TEE but did not submit assignments gets no grade at all.
Assignment Submission Deadlines 2026
IGNOU has two sessions — January and July — and each has its own assignment submission deadline:
| Session | Assignment Submission Last Date | TEE (Exam) |
|---|---|---|
| January 2026 Session | March 31, 2026 | June 2026 TEE |
| July 2026 Session | September 30, 2026 | December 2026 TEE |
If you are enrolled in the July 2026 session — your assignment submission deadline is September 30, 2026. You have time, but do not leave it for the last week. Study centres get overwhelmed near deadlines and some stop accepting assignments right at the cutoff.
Important: These dates can be extended by IGNOU — check ignou.ac.in regularly for any updates to deadlines.
Where to Get Your Assignment Questions
Assignment question booklets are available in two places:
- IGNOU official website: ignou.ac.in → Student Zone → Assignments. Select your programme and year.
- Your regional study centre: Physical copies are sometimes available at your assigned study centre.
Always download assignments from the official website to ensure you have the correct and most current version. Assignment questions can change between sessions.
How to Write IGNOU Assignments
Handwritten only. IGNOU requires all assignments to be handwritten. Typed or printed answers are not accepted. Write clearly and legibly — your tutor evaluates based on what they can read.
Answer in the language of your programme. If your programme is in English medium, write in English. If in Hindi or Urdu medium, write accordingly.
Follow the word limits. Each question specifies a word limit. Exceeding it significantly can result in marks being deducted. Staying close to the word limit shows you understand what is being asked.
Write your details on every page: Your name, enrolment number, programme code, course code, study centre code, and assignment number. If pages get separated, your work can still be identified.
Do not copy from the study material word for word. Tutors recognise this immediately. Read the study material, understand the concept, then write the answer in your own words. Original expression gets better marks than copied text.
How to Submit IGNOU Assignments
Assignments are submitted physically at your assigned study centre — not online, not by post to IGNOU headquarters.
Step 1: Complete your assignment in a clean notebook or loose sheets, properly bound or stapled.
Step 2: Write all required details on the front page — your name, enrolment number, programme, course code, session, and study centre code.
Step 3: Visit your assigned study centre and submit to the coordinator. Always ask for a receipt or acknowledgement with a stamp and signature. This is your proof of submission — keep it safely.
Step 4: Check your assignment status online after 3–4 weeks at ignou.ac.in → Student Zone → Assignment Status. Enter your enrolment number and programme.
For J&K students: Submit at your assigned study centre under the Srinagar or Jammu Regional Centre. Do not submit at a study centre you are not assigned to — it will not be accepted.
How to Check Assignment Status Online
- Go to ignou.ac.in
- Click on Student Zone → Assignment Status
- Enter your enrolment number and programme code
- Your submission and marks status will appear
If your assignment shows as submitted but marks are not updated, wait — evaluation takes time. If it has been more than 8 weeks after the TEE and marks are still not updated, contact your regional centre.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline
Missing the assignment submission deadline has serious consequences:
You cannot appear for the TEE. IGNOU’s system checks assignment submission before allowing exam admission. If assignments are not submitted, your hall ticket for that course will not be generated.
You lose that attempt. You will have to re-enrol for the course in the next session, resubmit assignments, and appear for the TEE in the following cycle. This delays your programme completion by 6 months to 1 year.
There is no grace period. IGNOU sometimes extends the deadline officially — but that extension is announced on the website. If no extension is announced, the deadline is final.
If you are close to missing the deadline, submit whatever you have completed rather than nothing. A partial submission is better than no submission in some cases — check with your study centre coordinator.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Submitting to the wrong study centre: You must submit at your assigned centre. Submitting elsewhere means your assignment will not be processed.
Not keeping a receipt: Always get a stamped acknowledgement when you submit. Without it, you have no proof of submission if a dispute arises.
Downloading old assignment questions: Assignment questions change between sessions. Always download the current session’s questions from ignou.ac.in.
Leaving submission for the last day: Study centres often have limited staff. Long queues near deadlines mean some students end up unable to submit on time. Go at least 2 weeks before the deadline.
Not checking your assignment status: Verify online that your submission has been recorded within 2–3 weeks of submitting. If it is not showing, follow up with your study centre immediately — do not wait until exam time.
